My Debit Card got Hacked!

Another lesson learned!  I am really racking them up these days!

Here’s the scoop:

Yesterday, I logged into my bank account and I noticed a couple of charges for $1.00 each.  I did not recognize the places of business and knew immediately that they did not belong to me.

I called my “financial institution” and they told me that it was all good and “no worries”.  Then I got off work early to go and pick up a new debit card.  I thought that would be the end of it.

Hmph!

Today I logged into my account and the $1.00 charges had dropped off, but now I had a charge for $100.00 and one for $47.00 that actually went through!  I WAS LIVID!

I called the bank and asked them why they let them go through!  If those charges would have been one cent bigger it would have wiped me out!  How dangerous is that?

They informed me that they had already gone through as of the time I called yesterday. Why didn’t they tell me that yesterday!?!

OMG, banks!  Really?

I have decided that I am going to get a new debit card every six months whether I need to or not.  I use my card every.single.day.

Gah!

Oh and on another note.  Today is Microsoft Patch Tuesday, so make sure you download your updates!

  1. That’s frustrating. I barely use my debit card at all, so I know small amounts like that would’ve kicked in my overdraft (I do keep $500 in a savings account for quick transfers). That is frustrating they wouldnt confirm with you about the past few transactions. A long time ago they stole my dad’s credit card, and when we called to cancel it, they confirmed the past 5 purchases. 2 of them werent my dad’s, so they reversed them right there and then. Ended up that one of them was legit (under a different name)– Oops. But better safe than sorry.

  2. This has happened to me before. Apparently my bank thought it was normal for me to shop in the supermarket in London and then make a cash withdrawal 20 mins later in Mainland Greece. They should have a system that automatically alerts them to weird purchases like that and put a stop to them.

  3. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Banks need to do a better job protecting their clients. Thanks for the update reminder 🙂 I don’t know many other bloggers who work in IT.

  4. strange that you online banking wouldn’t have at least showed those large transactions as pending. Mine show up right away. DH went to Home Depot yesterday with my debit card (while I was at work) and I wanted to know how much he spent (haha!) so I logged in shortly after I figured he’d be done there and on his way home and the charge was already there, pending. Good for you for looking at your bank balance to catch those $1.00 charges. That’s how I found mine when it happened to me.

    • Those 1.00 charges always concern me. Someone is pinging your acct! Sometimes they are legit. Now I have to wait up to 7 days for them to return my cash! ;-(
